The area offers unrivalled opportunities for outdoor
activities - sailing, swimming, windsurfing, fishing,
to name but a few. Additionally, within easy reach there is pony
trekking, clay pigeon shooting and golf.
The main attractions however, are the lakes and the mountains.
England's highest mountain and largest lake in an area of no more
than 40 miles square! You don't have to be a climber or a mountaineer
to enjoy the hills - long or short walking tours can be arranged either on your own or with one of
the many experienced guides. An alternative is to join a mini bus tour that meanders along some
of the narrowest country lanes that you will ever see and provides a more relaxed way to view the
beautiful scenery.
Within easy reach are Hadrian's Wall, the border city of Carlisle, or Kendal - the gateway to
the Lakes. There are many stately homes, gardens, and museums. On a literary note, the area
is of course well known for it's association with William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.
Their houses and farms are now part of the National Trust and are open to the public at various
times during the year.
Situated just above Bowness village and Lake Windermere, The Fairfield is set in peaceful secluded
surroundings that make it an ideal base from which to explore one of the loveliest areas in Britain
- the English Lake
District. The village and lake shore are a few minutes walk and nearby
footpaths give access to the open countryside and the fine local viewpoint
at the top of Brantfell.
The Fairfield is also ideally located for Dalesway walkers.
